Daniel's first chess strategy lessons were taught to him by Jack's friend Ted in 1996. Daniel began attending the U.S. Chess Center in Washington, D.C. where he got lessons and played games against his age group every Saturday. The Saturday sessions began to conflict with a modern dance class, so chess lessons took a back seat.
This is the bronze medallion Daniel won in his first tournament in 2000. He won 2 of his 4 games.

John Adams & Alexandria All-City Elementary Bands
This is the District X Band Festival, where the Alexandria All-City Elementary Band (composed of 5th and 6th graders from all elementary schools in Alexandria) took first place in its class, competing against eastern Fairfax County schools. Daniel is sitting second from left.
The Alexandria All-City Elementary Band achieved an "I" in all 4 of the judging categories, for an overall "I," which is the highest score a band can achieve and is the highest the All-Alexandria Band has achieved in many years, according to the Band Director, Tim Lutz. They were great!

Daniel is paired with the first chair of the adult band. The conductor for this piece plays trumpet in this band and conducts the Georgetown University Band for a living.
The kids are asked to stand while the adults applaud them.

Helen's photo appeared in the 5/14/01 issue of USA Today reporting that she participates in a study of aging done with the Catholic order of sisters called the School Sisters of Notre dame.
