New York, New York  2003.
2 - World Trade Center Site Tour
We hired a retired NYC police officer who gives personal tours of the World Trade Center site.  We enjoyed hearing about the events from someone who participated as a volunteer in the rescue and recovery operation after September 11, 2001.  The area almost looks like any other construction site if you don't know what to look for.
Photographs of the area before and after 9/11 are displayed on the construction fence to help put the events in context.
The site is huge and the hole enormous.  Construction has already begun on one replacement building and the subway tunnels below are about finished.
This sculpture was in the WTC plaza.  It was thrown around and damaged in the collapse.  It has been displayed in Battery Park until it can be moved to the new rebuilt plaza.
Gary told us that the closest fire station to the WTC (with the red doors) was totally destroyed and all stationed there were killed.  The front fascade has been rebuilt as a memorial.
The construction crew made this  memorial.
The Verizon Building still has damage from the Towers falling.
Someone placed their own memorial in the fence.
The model for the new WTC site shows a memorial plaza surrounded by five buildings, one of which will have a tower atop of it that will make it the tallest building in the world again.
